The Blueprint for Automation: Writing Your Project Specifications
Writing your project specifications is undeniably one of the most critical steps in ensuring the success of your robotic project. Before moving forward with any vendor or technology, you need to clearly define your operational needs and physical constraints.
Before diving in, there is something you need to know: a well-prepared specification document is the key to a seamless integration. Here are the fundamental questions you must answer:
> What are the factors driving your decision? You must identify the primary goals of your automation project. Are you focusing on reducing OPEX (Operational Expenditures) or improving overall Product Quality? You must also consider Safety Improvements for your workforce, the creation of Lean and Reliable material flows, and general Workplace improvements. Finally, assess the required Robot reliability necessary to meet your daily production targets without interruption.
> What are your warehouse specifications? The physical environment dictates the type of robotic solution you need. Detail the types and conditions of the floor, as well as critical warehouse dimensions including ceiling height, door widths, and aisle width. Specify whether the robots will operate strictly indoors or require indoor/outdoor use, and note any extreme atmospheric and environmental conditions (like cold storage or high humidity). Do not forget to include existing safety measures.
> What types of pallets and loads do you need to lift? Your automated guided vehicles (AGVs) must be perfectly matched to your inventory. Define the exact type of loads, their physical characteristics (weight, dimensions, and fragility), and the material of the pallets used (wood, plastic, metal). Crucially, outline the maximum and minimum pick and drop heights required for your current racking system.
> What is your flow system? Understanding your logistics traffic is essential. Map out the distances between Pick and Drop points, the total quantity of flows, and the required quantity of loads per hour to maintain optimal productivity. Specify the exact type of flows and the physical nature of your pick/drop points (e.g., conveyors, floor storage, gravity racks).
> What kind of communication technology is required? Modern robotics rely on seamless digital integration. Identify the necessary wireless technology infrastructure available in your facility. Outline how the robots will communicate with other external devices—such as automatic doors, fire alarms, and conveyors—as well as your higher-level IT systems like your ERP or WMS.
Thoroughly answering these questions will set the solid basis of a successful robotic project and need to be described in your specification document. It will allow you to get commercial and technical offers perfectly in line with your technical and operational requirements.
